Chapter 6: Some Unique Places
Introduction
Shanti wants a different kind of summer vacation this year. She tells her parents, Appa (father) and Amma (mother), that she wants to see more of our country. Appa smiles and says they will begin at the southernmost tip of India. Shanti guesses "Kanyakumari?" but Appa says No! Looking at the map, Shanti finds that the southernmost tip of India is Indira Point, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The chapter follows Shanti's family on a journey to four very special parts of India: the islands, the Sundarbans, the Northeast and the Western Ghats. At each place we learn how plants, animals and people live together with nature.
An island is land surrounded by water on all sides. There are over a thousand islands in the seas around India.
What We Learn
1. Islands of India – Andaman and Nicobar
2. Sundarbans – Home of the Mangroves
3. Northeast India – Green Hills and Great Traditions
4. Western Ghats
The journey ends at Kanyakumari, the southernmost point of the Indian mainland, where three seas meet.
