Unit 1: Foundational Basis of Physical Education and Well-being
Introduction
This unit shows how physical activity is linked to personal growth. Through six games and activities (IPE-1 to IPE-6), you build fitness, mental strength, teamwork and an understanding of safety rules. You also learn to recognise and report bullying, mental health concerns and inappropriate behaviour, so that the playground becomes a safe and respectful place for everyone.
Every activity in Khel Yatra follows the same four-part plan:
Key Ideas
IPE-1: The Ball Progression Game
A fun activity that improves coordination, teamwork and ball-handling.
IPE-2: Ghorpadiche Shepoot
The ghorpad is a monitor lizard (also called goh or goyra). "Shepoot" means tail.
Pop Up: In a team game, coordinated movements help you achieve better results.
IPE-3: Nalugu Rallu Ata
A traditional game from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana; the name means 'Four Stones Game'.
Pop Up: Focus on learning skills and the process of playing, not only on the result.
IPE-4: Gidhada Gudkavan
A chase between a hawk (gidhada) and chickens (gudkavan).
Pop Up: Winning as a team is far more important than individual milestones.
IPE-5: Stand Up, Speak Out (Bully Role Play)
Students play kho-kho while the teacher secretly gives four roles:
In Circle Time you discuss how bullying feels, why people bully, what bystanders did, and how bullying could be stopped.
Pop Up: Treat others the way you want to be treated.
IPE-6: Harassment Prevention Skit
Sexual harassment is a punishable offence and can lead to severe legal punishment.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Every Khel Yatra activity has four parts: warm-up, skill, cool-down and Circle Time.
- ✓Traditional games like Ghorpadiche Shepoot, Nalugu Rallu Ata and Gidhada Gudkavan build teamwork, agility and mental strength.
- ✓In bullying there are four roles – bully, target, bystanders and up-stander – and an up-stander can stop bullying.
- ✓Harassment is a punishable offence; the POCSO Act protects children, and incidents must be reported.
- ✓Self-assessment helps you reflect on safety, caring attitude, understanding bullying and harassment, and emotion control.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Set up the 20 × 10 m rectangle and markers before class so the Ball Progression Game starts quickly.
- →Before Ghorpadiche Shepoot, show a short video or picture of a centipede and tell the Tanaji Malusare story.
- →Draw the Nalugu Rallu Ata court on the ground and walk students through the Gumpu and Chuttu calls once before playing.
- →Assign bully-role-play roles secretly and remind everyone that it is acting, then debrief carefully in Circle Time.
- →Read the POCSO guidelines before the Harassment Prevention Skit and keep all scenarios hypothetical.
- →Use the deep-breathing cool-down to link physical activity with managing anger and anxiety.
- →End with the five-area self-assessment and discuss one area each student wants to improve.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student explain the rules of Nalugu Rallu Ata, including Gumpu and Chuttu?
