Unit 4: Fundamental Skills of Sports — Football

Introduction

Football (also called soccer) is played between two teams of 11 players. The goal is to kick the ball into the opponent's net. Players use their feet, head and body, but only the goalkeeper may use hands (within the penalty area). It is the most-watched sport in the world, with big tournaments like the FIFA World Cup. This unit has 13 skills (FSB-1 to FSB-13); most follow three stages: Approach → Execution → Follow Through.

Key Ideas

FSB-1: Kicking with the Inside of the Foot

  • Approach: place the non-kicking foot beside the ball (6 to 8 inches apart), pointing at the target.
  • Execution: the last step is slightly bigger; lock the ankle with toes pointing outward so the whole inside of the foot meets the centre and back of the ball.
  • Follow through: kicking foot points to the target.
  • Lead-up: partner passes at 3 m, 5 m, then 7 m, also with a moving ball.
  • FSB-2: Receiving with the Inside of the Foot

  • Face the ball; turn shoulders and hips to widen the body; let the ball touch the inside of the foot and draw the foot back to cushion it.
  • FSB-3: Passing the Rolling Ball

  • Non-kicking foot next to the ball, toes to the target; look up before passing; strike with the inside of the foot for control.
  • Drill under pressure: three passers and one defender in a small area.
  • FSB-4: Step Trapping

  • Get behind the line of the ball; for a rolling ball place your foot on top; for a low bounce, extend the foot and draw it back just before contact so the ball "dead drops".
  • Lead-up: trap balls rolled from 5 m into a 30 × 30 inch box – three rolling and three low-bouncing chances.
  • FSB-5: Dribbling

  • Bend the knees (low centre of gravity), keep the ball close, use inside and outside of both feet with short gentle touches, and keep your head up.
  • FSB-6: Feinting

  • A fake movement (shift of body weight, fake dribble, head movement) that wrong-foots the opponent; then push off the planted foot and go the other way.
  • FSB-7: Kicking for Accuracy

  • In a circle 10–15 yards wide with a marker in the middle: hitting the cone = 5 points, stopping in the inner circle = 3, the outer circle = 1.
  • FSB-8: Passing the Ball in the Air

  • Use the instep for longer, driven aerial passes and the inside of the foot for shorter, controlled passes; strike the middle or lower part of the ball.
  • Drill: partners 10–15 feet apart kick over a stump.
  • FSB-9: Pass and Move Relay

  • A short pass (5–7 m), return, then a long pass (about 15 m); the receiver dribbles back to the start.
  • FSB-10: Interception

  • Anticipate a pass meant for an opponent and move swiftly into the ball's path; then switch from defence to attack.
  • Person-to-person marking: each defender stays close to one opponent to stop them receiving a pass.
  • FSB-11: Front Block Tackling

  • Take the ball from an opponent without direct contact or a foul: approach leaning forward, block or knock the ball with the inside of the foot, non-tackling foot planted firmly.
  • FSB-12: Goalkeeping

  • Feet shoulder-width, knees bent, hands in a 'W' position, eyes on the ball; form a "basket" with hands and arms, elbows close to the sides, and pull the ball into the body.
  • FSB-13: 5-a-side Match

  • Teams of five on a 30 by 40 yard area; matches of 5 minutes; the winner plays the next round.
  • Activities & Drills

  • Partner passing and receiving rallies (score a point when the partner fails)
  • Cone dribbling race; feint-and-mirror drill
  • Circle interception game; ball-on-a-spot front block contest
  • Zig-zag cone run with a catch for goalkeepers
  • Task: mark a football field by joining dots and find the dimensions for junior boys and girls
  • Safety First

  • Tackle without being too aggressive; avoid fouls.
  • Watch for distress signals in yourself and others – discomfort in movement, bruises, rashes, intense pain, facial expressions.
  • Move carefully in small areas to protect yourself and others.
  • Key Terms

  • Instep (पैर का भीतरी भाग)
  • Pass (पास)
  • Receive / Trap (गेंद रोकना)
  • Penalty area (पेनल्टी क्षेत्र)
  • Centre of gravity (गुरुत्व केंद्र)
  • Cushioning (धक्का सोखना)
  • Follow through (प्रहार के बाद की गति)
  • Fun Facts

  • Football is the most-watched sport in the world; the FIFA World Cup is its biggest tournament.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the ankle loose while passing – lock it with toes pointing out.
  • Looking down while dribbling instead of keeping the head up.
  • Stabbing at the ball when receiving instead of drawing the foot back to cushion it.
  • Being too aggressive in a tackle and committing a foul.
  • Check Yourself

  • Which part of the foot is used for longer aerial passes?
  • What is a feint meant to do?
  • Who is allowed to use hands in football, and where?
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Football is played by two teams of 11; only the goalkeeper may use hands, within the penalty area.
    • ✓Most skills follow three stages: approach, execution and follow through.
    • ✓The inside of the foot is used for accurate short passes and for receiving; the instep is used for longer driven aerial passes.
    • ✓Dribbling needs a low centre of gravity, close control with both feet and the head up; feints wrong-foot the opponent.
    • ✓Defending skills include interception, person-to-person marking and front block tackling without fouls.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Demonstrate the locked ankle with toes pointing out before partner passing at 3, 5 and 7 m.
    • →Use a 30 × 30 inch chalk box for step-trapping practice from 5 m.
    • →Time the cone dribbling course and ask observers to note techniques of the fastest players.
    • →Set up the accuracy circle with a cone in the middle and use the 5-3-1 scoring.
    • →Teach safe front block tackling in slow motion first, stressing no direct contact.
    • →Play short 5-minute 5-a-side matches on a 30 × 40 yard area so everyone gets touches.
    • →Discuss distress signals in Circle Time to build care for teammates.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the student pass accurately with the inside of the foot and follow through to the target?
    2. Can the student receive and cushion a ball so it does not deflect?
    3. Can the student dribble through cones with the head up using both feet?
    4. Can the student explain interception and person-to-person marking?
    5. Does the student tackle safely without fouling?
