Unit 5: Fundamental Skills of Sports — Kabaddi

Introduction

Kabaddi is played between two teams. A raider goes into the opponent's half to touch (tag) defenders and return safely to their own half; the defenders try to catch the raider. Kabaddi builds strength, speed and teamwork, is popular in many countries and is played in the Asian Games. This unit has 10 skills: four offensive (raiding) skills and six defensive holds.

Key Ideas

Offensive Skills

KB-1: Raiding Foot Work – helps the raider avoid defenders and return safely.

  • Stance: feet parallel or diagonal, weight even, knees bent, head high, leaning slightly forward.
  • Move forward, sideways and backward with agility and anticipation.
  • Types of raid: Leading Leg Raid, Shuffling Leg Raid, Natural Run Raid.
  • Lead-up: blocks placed 30 feet (9.15 m) away; fetch them in the fastest time.
  • KB-2: Hand Touch – touch a defender and return.

  • Variations: vertical or diagonal on covers and corners; sideward swing on wings and supporter; sideward-to-forward on the chain in front; sideward-to-reverse on the defence covering the rear.
  • Lead-up: chest-number ball-grab game behind a 10-metre line (builds reaction time).
  • KB-3: Toe Touch – five types: on the same stance, one step back, running, dragging back, and feinting toe touch.

  • The baulk line is 3.75 metres from the midline; a raider must cross it for the raid to be valid.
  • Lead-up: run to the baulk line and toe-touch the shape the teacher calls.
  • KB-4: Kick – touch a defender with the leg and return.

  • Kick without flexing the knee, rear leg as pivot; bring the leg back immediately to avoid being caught.
  • Variations: back kick, side kick, roll or curve kick.
  • Defensive Positions

  • Corners – stand on the extreme right and left; they initiate tackles.
  • Centre – usually where the team's raider stands.
  • Ins – between corners and covers; protect the corner from going into the lobby or out of court.
  • Covers – between the ins and centre; usually the all-rounders.
  • Seven positions: Right Corner, Right In, Right Cover, Centre, Left Cover, Left In, Left Corner.
  • Defensive Skills (Holds)

The book describes a raider's time in the opponent's court as a "breath" of 30 seconds; holds aim to stop the raider returning within it.

  • KB-5: Ankle-hold – wide stance, watch the raider's foot, bend towards the ankle; inner hand on the ankle joint, the other hand supporting; then lift or pull the raider back.
  • KB-6: Thigh-hold – leading leg between the raider's stance, shoulder on the raider's hip joint, encircle the thigh with an elbow grip, inner hand below the knee; turn the raider towards the end line.
  • KB-7: Knee-hold – similar to the thigh hold; usually used by the second supporting defender; elbow, wrist or palm grip.
  • KB-8: Wrist-hold – two types: holding the wrist from above or from below; palms cupped, thumb apart; support with the other hand and pull towards the end line.
  • KB-9: Waist-hold – cover the raider's outer shoulder from behind, no gap; encircle the waist; drag, lift, change direction or fall back holding the raider.
  • KB-10: Chain-hold – defenders hold each other's wrist or palm to form a chain; place the chain on the raider's abdominal region and lift, or push the raider away from the midline.
  • Activities & Drills

  • Block-fetch race (footwork); chest-number ball grab (hand touch)
  • Shape-call toe touch; team kick relay to extended arms behind the bonus line
  • Ankle-hold drill during toe touch; thigh-lift relay; wrist pull from the midline
  • Waist-hold "train" game; elbow-lock pull with a folk song (chain-hold)
  • Task: mark the court by joining dots and find dimensions for junior boys and girls
  • Safety First

  • Avoid head collisions during chain holds.
  • Keep firm but controlled grips; do not pull by the neck or clothes.
  • Pair students of similar weight for lifting drills.
  • Key Terms

  • Raider (रेडर / आक्रमण करने वाला)
  • Defender (रक्षक)
  • Raid (रेड / धावा)
  • Midline (मध्य रेखा)
  • Baulk line (बॉक रेखा)
  • Bonus line (बोनस रेखा)
  • End line (अंतिम रेखा)
  • Lobby (लॉबी)
  • Corner / In / Cover (कोना / इन / कवर)
  • Hold (पकड़)
  • Chain (चेन / जंजीर)
  • Toe touch (पैर के पंजे से छूना)
  • Reaction time (प्रतिक्रिया समय)
  • Fun Facts

  • Kabaddi is played in the Asian Games and in many countries.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to cross the baulk line, which makes the raid invalid.
  • Flexing the knee while kicking, which reduces reach.
  • Breaking the chain grip or leaving a gap in the waist-hold.
  • Check Yourself

  • How far is the baulk line from the midline?
  • Which position usually initiates tackles?
  • Name the two types of wrist-hold.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓A raider must tag defenders and return to their own half; defenders try to stop the raider with holds.
    • ✓Offensive skills are raiding footwork, hand touch, toe touch and kick, each with variations.
    • ✓The baulk line is 3.75 m from the midline, and a raider must cross it for a valid raid.
    • ✓Defensive positions are corners, ins, covers and centre; corners initiate tackles and covers are usually all-rounders.
    • ✓Defensive holds include ankle, thigh, knee, wrist, waist and chain holds, done with firm grips and safety.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Mark the midline, baulk line and bonus line clearly with chalk before class.
    • →Use chest numbers for reaction-time games so every student stays alert.
    • →Teach each hold slowly in pairs before using it in play.
    • →Group students by similar weight for thigh-lift and chain drills.
    • →Show the seven defensive positions with students standing on the court.
    • →Stress head safety in chain holds and stop play if a hold becomes unsafe.
    • →Give the court-marking and rules research as a group task.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the student perform a hand touch and toe touch while staying balanced?
    2. Does the student cross the baulk line during a raid?
    3. Can the student name the defensive positions and their roles?
    4. Can the student demonstrate an ankle-hold or wrist-hold safely?
    5. Does the student follow safety rules in chain and waist holds?
