Chapter 10: Inner Dynamics of Dance (Dance)
Introduction
The Dance section of Kriti opens with a verse from the Sangita Damodara by Pandit Shubhankara:
Kāvyaṁ na bhāvena vinā, na bhāvena vinā rasaḥ | Na bhāvena vinā nṛtyaṁ … vinā jagat ||
Poetry cannot exist without emotion, nor can rasa arise without it. Dance cannot exist without emotion — indeed, the world itself cannot exist without emotion.
This chapter looks inside a dance movement: how breath powers it, how every movement begins and ends in stillness, and how old dance texts name postures and ways of moving.
Key Ideas
1. Breath in Dance
2. Elements of Dance — Stillness and Motion
3. What the Old Texts Say
4. Postures (Sthāna)
5. Motion (Chāri and Gati)
6. Karana — Putting It Together
Hasta-pāda-samāyogo nṛityasya karaṇaṁ bhavet — The combined movement of hands and feet in dance is called the Karana. (Nāṭyaśhāstra, Chapter IV, shloka 30)

Connect to Your Life
Notice your breath when you stretch after waking up (inhale) and when you curl up (exhale). Watch how a cricketer or goalkeeper is still before exploding into motion — the same stillness–motion–stillness pattern.
Common Mistakes
Let's Reflect
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Breath (prāna) links movements: expand/stretch on the inhale, contract on the exhale.
- ✓Every dance movement starts and ends in stillness — stillness, motion, stillness.
- ✓The Nāṭyaśhāstra, Sangīta Ratnākara and Abhinaya Darpaṇam name postures (sthāna) and ways of moving (chāri, gati, mandala).
- ✓Chāris are bhaumi (feet on the ground) or ākāshi (feet leave the ground); gati is a characteristic gait.
- ✓A karana is the coordinated movement of hands and feet; the Nāṭyaśhāstra describes 108 karanas.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Use a spacious, well-ventilated hall and start every class with 2 minutes of relaxed breathing and spine lengthening.
- →Call out 'inhale — expand' and 'exhale — contract' while students move so they physically feel the link.
- →Freeze-frame game: play music, stop it, and ask students to hold a still posture before moving again.
- →Show images of the Nataraja bronze beside a dancer in the same pose to connect sculpture and dance.
- →Let students invent gatis for animals from their region before showing the Abhinaya Darpaṇam examples.
- →Record short group sequences (Activity 10.5) so students can review their breath and stillness.
- →Encourage students to adapt postures to their own ability rather than forcing difficult positions.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student explain how inhaling and exhaling support expansion and contraction in dance?
- Can the student name the three types of sthāna in the Nāṭyaśhāstra?
- Can the student distinguish bhaumi and ākāshi chāris with examples?
- Can the student define karana and state how many the Nāṭyaśhāstra describes?
- Does the student create a sequence that starts and ends in stillness with breath awareness?
