Lesson 15
Project: Obstacle-Avoiding Robot
Design a robot that stops or turns before hitting things
1Problem Statement✨
In our daily lives, robots can help us navigate spaces without colliding with obstacles. This project addresses the challenge of designing a robot that can autonomously avoid obstacles, making it safer and more efficient in various environments.
2Objective🎯
In this lesson, students will learn how to conceptualize a simple obstacle-avoiding robot. They will understand basic sensor integration, data processing, and decision-making processes that allow a robot to respond to its environment.
3Required Components/Software💡
4- Hardware:🚀
- Microcontroller (e.g., Arduino)
- Ultrasonic distance sensor (e.g., HC-SR04)
- Servo motors or DC motors for movement
- Chassis for the robot (can be built from LEGO or cardboard)5- Software:🔍
- Arduino IDE for programming
- Basic knowledge of C/C++ for writing code6Architecture⭐
The ultrasonic sensor detects obstacles by emitting sound waves and measuring the time it takes for the echo to return. The microcontroller processes this data to determine the distance to the nearest object. If an obstacle is detected within a set distance, the robot will stop or change direction using the motors.
7Step-by-Step Instructions🧩
- 1. Sketch a simple design of your robot, including where to place the sensor and motors.
- 2. Connect the ultrasonic sensor to the microcontroller, ensuring the trigger and echo pins are correctly wired.
- 3. Attach the motors to the chassis and connect them to the microcontroller, setting up a power supply.
- 4. Write a basic program that reads distance data from the ultrasonic sensor and controls the motors based on the readings.
- 5. Test your robot in an open space and observe how it reacts to obstacles.
8Expected Output🎈
Success looks like a robot that can move forward and stop or turn when it detects an obstacle within a specified range. The robot should be able to navigate around simple objects without crashing.
9Challenge / Extension✨
To enhance the project, try adding more sensors (like infrared sensors) to improve obstacle detection in different environments or implement a more complex navigation algorithm that allows the robot to map its surroundings.
