Lesson 17
Project: AI Vision Robot
Combine computer vision with robot movement to follow or find objects
1Problem Statement✨
Many everyday tasks require robots to identify and interact with objects in their environment. For example, a robot that can follow a specific object can assist in delivering items or help visually impaired individuals navigate spaces. This project addresses the challenge of enabling robots to recognize and track objects using computer vision.
2Objective🎯
In this project, students will learn how to combine computer vision techniques with basic robotics to create a robot that can follow or locate an object. They will understand the principles of image processing and how to program a robot to react to visual stimuli.
3Required Components/Software💡
4- Arduino or Raspberry Pi🚀
- Webcam or USB camera
- Motor driver (e.g., L298N)
- DC motors with wheels
- OpenCV library (Python)
- Python programming environment (e.g., Thonny or PyCharm)5Architecture🔍
The webcam captures video frames of the environment and sends them to a computer (or Raspberry Pi) where the OpenCV library processes the frames to detect the target object. The detected object's position is then communicated to the Arduino, which controls the motors to move the robot towards the object.
6Step-by-Step Instructions⭐
1. Set up your hardware: Connect the motors to the motor driver and attach it to the Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
2. Install OpenCV: Use pip to install the OpenCV library in your Python environment.
3. Write a basic Python script: Capture video from the webcam and use OpenCV to detect a specific color or shape.
7```python🧩
import cv2
cap = cv2.VideoCapture(0)
while True:
ret, frame = cap.read()
# Add object detection code here
cv2.imshow('Frame', frame)
if cv2.waitKey(1) & 0xFF == ord('q'):
break
cap.release()
```4. Implement motor control: Based on the object's position, send commands from Python to Arduino to move the robot towards the object.
5. Test and refine: Run the program to see how well your robot follows the object and make adjustments as needed.
8Expected Output🎈
Success looks like the robot moving towards and following a designated object, such as a colored ball or a specific shape, smoothly and accurately as it detects changes in the object's position.
9Challenge / Extension✨
To make the project more challenging, try programming the robot to follow multiple colored objects simultaneously or add obstacle avoidance capabilities so it can navigate around furniture while tracking its target.
