💡 Learn it first
In algebra a letter stands for a number. “5 more than x” is x + 5; “3 times y” is 3y.
Terms are joined by + or −: 4x² − 3x + 7 has three terms. The number in front of a letter is its coefficient (−3 is the coefficient of x); 7 is the constant term.
Like terms have the same letters and powers: 3x + 5x = 8x. Unlike terms cannot be added: 3x + 2y stays 3x + 2y.
To find the value, put the number in place of the letter: 3x + 5 when x = 4 → 3 × 4 + 5 = 17.
A combination of numbers, letters and operations, like 3x + 5 or 2a − b. An expression has no “=” sign; an equation does.
