Mechanical advantage (MA) tells how many times a machine multiplies your force: MA = load ÷ effort. Work is done when a force moves something: work (joules, J) = force (newtons) × distance (metres). A ramp lets you push a heavy box up with a smaller force over a longer distance; for an ideal (frictionless) ramp, effort = load × height ÷ length. Machines never reduce the work — they trade force for distance.

Less force, more distance — “machines multiply force but the work (force × distance) stays the same”
Use it for: Physics lessons on work and machines, wheelchair ramps and loading trucks.
Check: Work up the ramp 50 N × 8 m = 400 J = lifting 200 N × 2 m ✓
