Exponents and powers — Maths worksheet

In 2⁵ the base is 2 and the power (exponent) is 5: 2⁵ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32. With the same base, multiplying adds the powers and dividing subtracts them. A negative power means "one over": 2⁻³ = 1/2³ = 1/8. Very big and very small numbers are written in standard form, like 3.6 × 10⁵ = 360000.

The method

Same base, work the powers — “multiplying adds the powers, dividing subtracts them, a power of a power multiplies them”

  1. aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ, aᵐ ÷ aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ, (aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐⁿ, a⁰ = 1.
  2. a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ, and (a/b)⁻ⁿ = (b/a)ⁿ.
  3. Standard form: one digit before the point × a power of 10 — 4500000 = 4.5 × 10⁶.
  4. × 10⁻ⁿ moves the decimal point n places to the left: 2.5 × 10⁻³ = 0.0025.

Use it for: Distances in space, sizes of bacteria, populations, and the exponents and powers chapter of Class 8 maths.

Worked example: What is the value of 2⁻³ (as a fraction)? → 1/8

  1. A negative power means 1 over the positive power: 2⁻³ = 1/2³.
  2. 2³ = 8, so the answer is 1/8.

Check: 1/8 × 2³ = 1/8 × 8 = 1 ✓
