A linear equation can have the unknown on both sides: 5x + 3 = 2x + 18. Move the x terms to one side and the numbers to the other — a term changes its sign when it crosses the = sign — so 3x = 15 and x = 5. Open brackets first, and clear fractions by multiplying both sides by the LCM of the denominators.
