Modals are helping verbs used with a main verb in its base form: She can swim. You must go.
can — ability; could — past ability, polite request; may — permission, possibility; might — less likely possibility.
must — necessity, strong duty (must not — prohibition); should / ought to — advice, duty; would — polite request; shall — suggestion (with I / we); need not — no necessity.
can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would, ought to, need, dare and used to (the last few are semi-modals).
