Sight words set 2 — Phonics for kids

The second set has trickier words: said, was, they, have, come, here, look, what, where, there, out, play, are, were, do and some. Many do not sound the way they are spelt, so we practise them until they are instant.

How the sounds work

Know it at a glance — “tricky words that do not follow the rules are learnt by heart”

  1. Look at the tricky part: s-ai-d sounds like “sed”.
  2. Say the word, spell it, say it again.
  3. Use it in a sentence: “Where is my book?”

Use it for: Reading Class 1 story books and writing simple sentences correctly.

Worked example: ___ is my book? → Where

  1. Read the sentence and try each word in the gap: They, Said, Where.
  2. Only “Where” makes a good sentence: Where is my book?

Check: “Where is my book?” is a real question ✓
