Party time — Spoken English for kids

A birthday party is the perfect place for polite English. This lesson teaches “Would you like …?” and “I’d like …”, some and any, things we can and cannot count, and “What a …!” to show you like something.

Speaking tips

Grammar point — “Would you like …? / I’d like …; some, any; What a …!”

  1. Offer politely: “Would you like some cake?” Answer: “Yes, please.” or “No, thank you.” Ask: “I’d like …, please.”
  2. Use some in yes-sentences and any in questions and not-sentences: “Are there any samosas?” “We don’t have any popcorn.”
  3. Things we cannot count (water, rice, juice) take some, not a. Show you like something: “What a big cake!”

Use it for: Birthday parties, guests at home, ordering food, and sharing tiffin with friends.

Worked example: Would you ___ some cake? Like

  1. Read the sentence and try each word in the gap: liking, like, likes.
  2. The polite question is Would you like some cake?

Check: Offer a family member a snack aloud: “Would you like some …?” ✓
