A singular subject takes a singular verb; a plural subject takes a plural verb: The dog barks. The dogs bark.
Each, every, everyone, everybody, either, neither and one of … take a singular verb: Each of the boys has a pen. One of my friends lives in Delhi.
With either … or / neither … nor, the verb agrees with the nearer subject. Two subjects joined by and are plural, but “bread and butter” (one dish) is singular.
Words like news, mathematics, physics are singular; scissors, trousers, spectacles are plural. “The number of …” is singular; “A number of …” is plural.
The verb must match its subject in number: a singular subject takes a singular verb (She plays) and a plural subject takes a plural verb (They play).
