Thinking about consequences — Critical thinking for kids
A consequence is what follows an action — and one consequence often leads to another. If the tap is left open, the tank empties; if the tank empties, there is no water; if there is no water, the plants go dry. Thinking ahead means picturing the chain before you act, not after. Acting on impulse skips that step.
Think one step ahead — “every action starts a chain”
Follow the chain: start from what happened and use each “if” rule in turn.
Thinking ahead: asking “what if?”, imagining what follows, thinking of others, reading the rules first, waiting a moment.
Acting on impulse: acting without thinking, ignoring warnings, only thinking of now, speaking in anger.
Use it for: Daily habits, saving money, screen time, friendships, safety and the environment.
Worked example: 🔮 If the tank empties, there is no water. If the tap is left open, the tank empties. If there is no water, the plants go dry. Suppose the tap is left open. What happens next? → the tank empties
Start from “the tap is left open” and find the rule that begins with it.
“If the tap is left open, the tank empties.”
Check: Try it: before one decision today, write the chain: “If I…, then… then…” ✓
Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
