In an earthquake the ground shakes from side to side. Buildings stay safer when they have a wide, strong base, flexible joints that bend instead of cracking, cross bracing in the walls, steel bars inside the concrete, a light roof and a simple, even shape; some sit on rubber pads that soak up the shaking. Heavy roofs on thin walls, loose bricks, missing steel and heavy tanks high up make buildings less safe. A tall, narrow block tips over more easily than a short, wide one.
✓ You passed this lesson’s test.
Low, wide, flexible — “keep it steady at the bottom, light at the top and able to bend”
Use it for: Geography and science lessons on earthquakes, shake-table model challenges and disaster-safety weeks.
Check: A 60 cm tower on a 30 cm base (2) is steadier than one on a 10 cm base (6) ✓
