A beam bridge is a flat deck resting on supports — simple and good for short gaps; long ones need piers in between. An arch bridge carries its load round a curve, squeezing its stones together and pushing outwards on its ends, as in old stone bridges of fort towns. A suspension bridge hangs its deck from cables slung over tall towers and tied down at the ends; it crosses the widest gaps, like a long cable bridge over a city’s harbour or a rope bridge in the hills.
