Prototypes and fair tests — Engineering for kids

A prototype is an early test model — cheap and quick to build — that shows whether an idea works before the real thing is made. Engineers test prototypes fairly: they change only one thing at a time, keep everything else the same, measure rather than guess, repeat each test and write every result down. Then they compare results, work out the mean (average) and improve the design.

Engineer's tip

Test fairly, record honestly — “change one thing, keep the rest the same, measure and repeat”

  1. Prototype = an early model made to test an idea.
  2. Fair test: change one thing, keep the rest the same, measure and record every result.
  3. Mean of three tests = (first + second + third) ÷ 3.

Use it for: Science-fair projects, STEM challenges and any time two designs must be compared fairly.

Worked example: 🧪 A paper bridge was tested three times. It held 300 g, 260 g and 280 g. What is the mean (average) load it held, in grams? → 280

  1. 300 + 260 + 280 = 840 g.
  2. 840 ÷ 3 = 280 g.

Check: 280 × 3 = 840 = 300 + 260 + 280 ✓
