Simple sentences — English writing skills for kids
A simple sentence has just one clause: one subject and its main verb. “The old fisherman mended his net on the beach.” is simple. Careful — “Kavya sang a song and danced on the stage.” is simple too: there is only one subject (Kavya), doing two actions.
One clause only — “a simple sentence has one subject and its verb — even when that subject does two things”
Find the subject — WHO or WHAT the sentence is about (The old fisherman) — and the main verb, the action (mended).
One subject with its verb is one clause → a simple sentence. One subject with two verbs joined by “and” (Kavya sang and danced) is still simple; two subjects, each with its own verb (Kavya can swim, and her brother can swim too), make a compound sentence.
To join two simple sentences into ONE simple sentence, turn one of them into a phrase: “The man sold us mangoes. He had a long beard.” → The man with a long beard sold us mangoes.
Use it for: Clear, correct answers in every subject, and “identify the sentence” and “join into one simple sentence” exercises in Class 6–9 grammar.
Worked example: Which of these is a simple sentence? → Kavya sang a song and danced on the stage.
The choices: “Kavya sang a song and danced on the stage.”, “The boy who won the race is my cousin.”, “Imran wore a cap, and his brother wore one too.”
“who won the race” is a second clause (complex), and “his brother wore one too” has its own subject (compound). Kavya is the only subject of the first sentence — she sang and danced — so it is one clause: a simple sentence.
Check: Who sang? Kavya. Who danced? Kavya — one subject, one clause ✓
Read every choice carefully, then tap the one that is written correctly. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
