Staying motivated after setbacks — Exam preparation tips

Everyone has setbacks: a low mark, a missed week, a plan that did not work. What matters is the next step. Look at what went wrong, say something kind and honest to yourself (“One low mark does not define me”), make the next step smaller and ask a teacher or friend for help. Small daily wins rebuild motivation; comparing with others and harsh self-blame drain it.

Study tip

Learn, shrink, restart — “a setback is information — use it and take a smaller next step”

  1. Helpful thoughts: “I can learn from this.”, “What will I do differently next time?”, “One low mark does not define me.”
  2. Unhelpful thoughts: “I am just bad at this.”, “Why bother?”, “Everyone is better than me.”
  3. Keep going: recall your reason, celebrate small steps, a study buddy, a progress chart, a smaller next step. If you feel low for a long time, talk to a parent or teacher.

Use it for: After a low mark, a missed target, a lost match or a week when the plan fell apart.

Worked example: True or false: “One low mark does not define me.” is a helpful thought after a setback. → True

  1. It is kind, honest and keeps you working.
  2. So the sentence is True.

Check: Try it: think of one recent setback and write what went wrong, one kind thought and one smaller next step ✓
