How to work it out

On the marked price — “discount % = discount ÷ marked price × 100”

  1. Discount = marked price − sale price.
  2. Discount % = discount ÷ marked price × 100.
  3. p% off: sale price = marked price − p% of it (or simply pay (100 − p)% of it).

Use it for: Shopping sales, festival offers, online prices and Class 7–8 discount sums.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Discount calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: A lunch box marked ₹600 has 15% off in a sale. What is the sale price, in rupees? → 510

  1. The discount is 15% of the marked price, ₹600.
  2. 15% of 600 = 15 × 600 ÷ 100.
  3. 15 × 600 = 9000. Divide by 100 (take away two zeros): 9000 ÷ 100 = 90.
  4. Sale price = 600 − 90 = 510.

Check: Pay 85% of 600 = 85 × 6 = 510 ✓
