What is a percentage?

A percentage is a number out of 100: “per cent” means “for every hundred”, so 45% means 45 out of every 100. To calculate a percentage, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100 — 18 out of 24 is 18 ÷ 24 × 100 = 75%. To find a percentage of a number, multiply and divide by 100 — 35% of 80 is 35 × 80 ÷ 100 = 28. Percentages let us compare things of different sizes: marks out of 80 and out of 500, a ₹40 price rise on a ₹200 bag and on a ₹2000 phone. This free course is useful from Class 4 to Class 10: Part 1 (ages 9–11) explains what a percent is and the 10%, 25% and 50% shortcuts, Part 2 (ages 10–13) covers percentage of a number, what percent one number is of another, marks and finding the whole, Part 3 (ages 12–16) covers percentage increase, decrease, change and difference, and Part 4 (ages 12–16) uses percentages with money: profit, loss, discount, GST and simple interest. Every lesson explains the method, works an example, and gives unlimited practice with “Show me how”, a 20-question test, a badge and printable worksheets.

Percentage Made Easy questions

How do you calculate a percentage?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 18 out of 24 is 18 ÷ 24 × 100 = 75%. To find a percentage of a number, multiply the percent by the number and divide by 100: 35% of 80 = 35 × 80 ÷ 100 = 28.

Percentage kaise nikale? (Hindi)

How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?

Find the change (new − old for an increase, old − new for a decrease), divide it by the OLD value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is a 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% increase; from 100 to 80 is a 20 ÷ 100 × 100 = 20% decrease.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Percentage change compares a new value with an old one, so you divide by the old value. Percentage difference compares two values side by side, where neither comes first, so you divide by their average: 40 and 60 differ by 20 ÷ 50 × 100 = 40%.

How do I calculate the percentage of my marks?

Add the marks you scored and the total marks of all subjects, then divide and multiply by 100. 432 out of 500 is 432 × 100 ÷ 500 = 86.4%.
