Percentage difference — How to calculate percentage

Percentage change has an old and a new value. But when you compare two things side by side — two shops, two players — neither one is “old”. Then use percentage difference: divide the difference by the average of the two numbers.

How to work it out

Use the average — “when neither number comes first, divide the difference by their average”

  1. Difference = bigger − smaller.
  2. Average = (first + second) ÷ 2.
  3. Percentage difference = difference ÷ average × 100.

Use it for: Comparing prices in two shops, two players’ scores, or two readings in a science experiment.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Percentage calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: What is the percentage difference between 40 and 60? → 40

  1. Difference = 60 − 40 = 20.
  2. Neither number is the “old” one, so compare with their average: (40 + 60) ÷ 2 = 100 ÷ 2 = 50.
  3. 20 × 100 = 2000, and 2000 ÷ 50 = 40. The percentage difference is 40%.

Check: 40% of the average 50 is 20, which is the difference ✓
