Equivalent fractions are the same amount: 3/4 = 6/8 = 15/20, because top and bottom are multiplied by the same number. Fractions with the same denominator are easy to compare and add: 3/8 + 1/8 = 4/8, which simplifies to 1/2. With the same numerator, the smaller denominator means bigger pieces.
