Long division by a 1-digit number — Maths worksheet

Long division goes digit by digit from the left. 756 ÷ 6: 7 ÷ 6 = 1 with 1 left; bring down 5 to make 15; 15 ÷ 6 = 2 with 3 left; bring down 6 to make 36; 36 ÷ 6 = 6. The answer is 126. Whatever is left at the very end is the remainder.

The method

Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — “work from the left digit by digit, carrying the remainder to the next digit”

  1. Start with the first digit (or first two digits if the first is too small).
  2. Divide, multiply, subtract, then bring down the next digit.
  3. Repeat until every digit is used; what is left is the remainder.
  4. Check: divisor × quotient + remainder = the number.

Use it for: Sharing money equally, packing things in boxes, and the division chapter of Class 4 maths.

Worked example: 756 ÷ 6 = 126

  1. 7 ÷ 6 = 1 rem 1; bring down 5: 15 ÷ 6 = 2 rem 3; bring down 6: 36 ÷ 6 = 6.
  2. So 756 ÷ 6 = 126.

Check: 6 × 126 = 756 ✓
