In algebra a letter stands for a number we do not know yet. "5 more than n" is written n + 5, and "3 times n" is written 3n. To find the value of an expression, put the number in place of the letter. An equation such as x + 7 = 15 is like a balance: take 7 from both sides and x = 8.
