Ten single digits are too many for short-term memory, but three chunks are easy. 9876543210 becomes 987 654 3210. Chunks work even better when they mean something: 15081947 is a date — 15/08/1947 — and 1947 is “nineteen forty-seven”, two chunks. Chunking never changes the digits; it only groups them.

Fewer, bigger pieces — “group digits so the small desk of memory holds them”
Use it for: Phone numbers, roll numbers, dates in history, PIN codes and long numbers in maths.
Check: Try it: learn a family member’s phone number in chunks of 3-3-4 and say it from memory tomorrow ✓
