Part 1 test: how memory works — Memory techniques for students
This test mixes questions from the five Part 1 lessons: how memory works, attention, short-term and long-term memory, the forgetting curve, and sleep, food, water and breaks. Pass it to earn the Part 1 badge.
Know your memory — “notice, store, recall — and review before it fades”
Find the topic of the question: memory steps, attention, short or long term, forgetting, or habits.
Use that lesson’s tip — notice, store, recall; you keep what you notice; a small desk and a big cupboard; review before it fades; a rested brain remembers.
For sums: add the gaps to the learning day, add study blocks and breaks, or count the hours of sleep.
Use it for: Revising Part 1 before you start the mnemonics.
Worked example: 🧠 In the three steps of memory, which comes first: pay attention or store it? → pay attention
Memory works in three steps: notice it → store it → recall it.
“Pay attention” is step 1 and “store it” is step 2, so “pay attention” comes first.
Check: Try it: explain the three steps of memory and the forgetting curve to someone at home in two minutes ✓
Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
