Barriers to communication — Communication skills for students

A barrier is anything that stops a message from getting through. Physical barriers are noise and distance: a loud drill outside, a crackly phone line, a weak network. Language barriers are words the listener does not know: hard technical words, too much slang, short forms like “IDK”. Emotional barriers are strong feelings: anger, shyness, fear of being laughed at. Each barrier has a fix — a quieter place, simpler words, or calming down first.

Communication tip

Find the block, fix the block — “noise, words or feelings — each has its own fix”

  1. Physical barrier: a loud drill outside, a crackly phone line, honking traffic, a weak network, talking across a field. Fix: move closer or to a quieter place, call back later.
  2. Language barrier: hard technical words, an unknown language, too much slang, short forms like “IDK”. Fix: simple words, ask what a word means.
  3. Emotional barrier: being very angry, feeling too shy to talk, being upset after a fight, fear of being laughed at. Fix: calm down first, talk privately. Distractions (a phone mid-talk) also block messages — put them away.

Use it for: Noisy classrooms, bad phone lines, talking to younger children or elders, and arguments.

Worked example: 🧱 Which barrier to communication is a crackly phone line? → a physical barrier

  1. A bad line is noise in the channel — a problem with the place or the equipment.
  2. So it is a physical barrier.

Check: Try it: the next time a message goes wrong, name the barrier (physical, language or emotional) and try its fix ✓
