Open and closed questions — Communication skills for students

Good listeners ask good questions. A closed question can be answered with “yes”, “no” or one word: “Did you like the trip?” An open question needs a longer answer: “What did you like about the trip?” Open questions start with what, how or why and keep a conversation going; closed questions are perfect for quick facts. Ask one question at a time, wait for a pause, and really listen to the answer.

Communication tip

What, how, why open the door — “is, do, did get a quick yes or no”

  1. Open questions (what, how, why): “What happened at the match?”, “How did you make that model?”, “Why do you like cricket?”
  2. Closed questions (is, are, do, did, was, have): “Is it raining?”, “Did you finish the model?”, “Have you eaten lunch?”
  3. Good question habits: asking when unsure, one question at a time, waiting for a pause, asking politely. Poor: asking five at once, asking mid-sentence, rude personal questions.

Use it for: Getting to know new classmates, doubts in class, asking grandparents about the old days and project interviews.

Worked example: ❓ Open or closed question? “Did you like the trip?” → a closed question

  1. It can be answered with just “yes” or “no”.
  2. So it is a closed question.

Check: Try it: ask a grandparent or neighbour three open questions about their childhood and listen to the answers ✓
