The motion, proposition and opposition — Debate and group discussion

A debate is about a motion — a statement such as “This House would make homework optional.” The proposition argues for the motion: it speaks first, defines the key words and must prove the motion. The opposition argues against it: it answers the proposition and must disprove the motion. A good motion is debatable — sensible people can argue both sides. “This House believes a week has seven days” is a plain fact, so it cannot be debated.

Debater's tip

Two sides, one motion — “the proposition proves the motion, the opposition disproves it”

  1. Motion: the statement being debated, often starting “This House believes…” or “This House would…”.
  2. Proposition: for the motion, speaks first, defines the key words, ends “I beg to propose”. Opposition: against it, answers the proposition, ends “I beg to oppose”.
  3. Good debate topics for students have two real sides; a plain fact is not debatable.

Use it for: Choosing debate topics for students, preparing for inter-house and inter-school debates.

Worked example: ⚖️ Which side defines the key words? → the proposition

  1. The proposition opens the debate, so it must first make clear what the motion means.
  2. So the proposition defines the key words.

Check: Practise aloud: state the motion “This House would make cooking a school subject”, define its key words and say “I beg to propose” ✓
