Adding value in a GD — Debate and group discussion

Evaluators reward quality, not quantity. You add value with a new example, a fact with numbers, a fresh angle, a practical solution, a question that helps the group, the other side’s view or a short summary so far. Repeating the last point, saying only “I agree”, going off topic, made-up figures and personal attacks add nothing.

Debater's tip

Say something new — “before you speak, ask: what new thing am I adding?”

  1. Adds value: a new example, a fresh angle, a fact with numbers, linking two ideas, a practical solution, a helpful question.
  2. Adds nothing: repeating, “I agree” and no more, going off topic, long pointless stories, slogans, made-up figures.
  3. If your point is taken, add a new angle or example instead of repeating it.

Use it for: The middle of every GD, class discussions and team meetings.

Worked example: 💎 Does this add value to a GD: repeating the last point? → adds nothing

  1. The group has just heard that point, so nothing new is added.
  2. So repeating the last point adds nothing.

Check: Practise aloud: for “How can our school waste less food?”, give one example, one fact and one solution in 45 seconds ✓
