Circuit symbols — Electronics for kids

Engineers draw circuits with symbols because they are quick and clear everywhere. A cell is a long thin line and a short thick line (the long line is +); a battery is two or more cell symbols. A bulb is a circle with a cross, a switch is a line lifted at a gap, a resistor is a plain rectangle, a diode is a triangle against a bar and an LED is the same with two arrows coming out. Wires are straight lines and a dot shows where wires join.

Remember

Shape tells the part — “each part has one simple drawing that everyone understands”

  1. Cell: long and short line (long = +). Battery: two or more cells. Wire: straight line. Junction: a dot.
  2. Bulb: circle with a cross. Switch: line lifted at a gap. Resistor: rectangle. Capacitor: two equal parallel lines.
  3. Diode: triangle against a bar; LED: the same with two arrows out. Circle with M = motor, A = ammeter, V = voltmeter.

Use it for: Reading and drawing circuit diagrams in science, following kit instructions and before reading any circuit plan.

Worked example: ✏️ In a circuit diagram, which part is drawn as a circle with a cross? → bulb

  1. A circle with a cross (an X) inside it is the lamp symbol.
  2. So it stands for a bulb.

Check: A circle with M would be a motor, not a bulb ✓
