In a series circuit the bulbs are joined one after another, so there is only one path for the current. Take one bulb out and the path breaks — every bulb goes out. Identical bulbs in series share the battery voltage equally (6 V across 3 identical bulbs gives 2 V each), so adding more bulbs makes them dimmer. (We assume ideal wires and identical bulbs.)
