Resistors are too small to print numbers on, so they wear colour bands. Each colour is a digit: black 0, brown 1, red 2, orange 3, yellow 4, green 5, blue 6, violet 7, grey 8, white 9. Read from the end away from the gold band: the first two bands are digits and the third tells how many zeros to add. Brown-black-red is 1, 0 and two zeros = 1000 Ω (1 kΩ). A gold fourth band means ±5 %.
