The grammar rule

Match the two halves — “the tense in the “if” part decides the verb in the other part”

  1. Zero (always true): if + present, present — If you heat ice, it melts.
  2. First (likely future): if + present, will + base — If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home. Never “will” in the if part.
  3. Second (imaginary): if + past, would + base — If I had wings, I would fly to school.

Use it for: Science facts, plans and imagination in essays, and if-clause questions in Class 8–10.

Worked example: If it rains tomorrow, you ___ at home. → will stay

  1. “If it rains tomorrow” is a likely future event with the present tense: first conditional.
  2. The other half takes will + base form: will stay.

Check: “would stay” needs “If it rained”; with “rains” it is will stay ✓
