The grammar rule

Opposite tag, same helper — “positive sentence → negative tag; use the same helping verb and a pronoun”

  1. Use the helping verb of the sentence (is, can, will, has …). With no helping verb, use do / does / did.
  2. Positive sentence → negative tag (isn’t she?); negative sentence → positive tag (is she?).
  3. End with a subject pronoun (he, she, they — not him or them). Special: I am … aren’t I?

Use it for: Natural spoken English, checking facts politely, and tag questions in school tests.

Worked example: Add the question tag: Karan plays cricket every day, ___? → doesn't he

  1. “plays” has no helping verb; for the simple present with he / she we use does.
  2. The sentence is positive, so the tag is negative, with the pronoun he: doesn’t he.

Check: Karan plays cricket every day, doesn’t he? — does matches plays, he matches Karan ✓
