The grammar rule

Find the link — “ask how the two parts are related: added, opposite, a choice, a reason or a result”

  1. and = adds (Riya and Kabir); or = a choice (tea or milk?); but = opposite or surprising (small, but very sweet).
  2. because = the second part gives the reason (… because she was hungry).
  3. so = the second part is the result (She was hungry, so she ate).

Use it for: Writing longer, smoother sentences in stories and answers, and joining-sentence exercises.

Worked example: Choose the joining word: Riya ate two mangoes ___ she was hungry. → because

  1. “She was hungry” is the reason why Riya ate two mangoes.
  2. A reason after the gap needs “because”.

Check: Swap it round: “Riya was hungry, so she ate two mangoes” — same meaning ✓
