Capital letters and punctuation — English grammar for kids

Punctuation makes writing easy to read. A sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark. Names of people, places, days, months and festivals always take capitals, and so does “I”.

The grammar rule

Capitals, marks, apostrophes — “start names with a capital, end with the right mark, put the apostrophe where letters are missing”

  1. Capital letters: the first word of a sentence, the word I, and every proper noun (Jaipur, Monday, Diwali).
  2. End marks: ? after a question, . after a telling sentence, ! after “What a …!” or “How …!”.
  3. Apostrophes: in short forms, where letters are left out (do not → don’t); and to show who owns something (Riya’s bag).

Use it for: Every piece of writing, editing your own work, and punctuation questions in school tests.

Worked example: Which word should start with a capital letter? “My uncle lives in jaipur.” → jaipur

  1. Jaipur is the name of a city — a proper noun.
  2. Proper nouns start with a capital letter: Jaipur.

Check: Uncle, lives and in are common words; only the city name needs a capital ✓
