Past perfect tense — English grammar for kids

When two things happened in the past, the past perfect shows which one happened first. Use had + V3 for the earlier action: “I had caught the ball before the bell rang.”

The grammar rule

had + V3 — “the earlier of two past actions”

  1. had + past participle (V3) for every subject: had caught, had gone, had eaten.
  2. Time words: before …, by the time …, when … already.
  3. The later action is in the simple past (the bell rang).

Use it for: Telling stories in the right order, explaining reasons in the past, and Class 7–10 tense exercises.

Worked example: I ___ the ball before the bell rang. → had caught

  1. Two past actions: catching the ball happened first, the bell rang later.
  2. The earlier action takes had + V3: had caught (catch → caught → caught).

Check: First “had caught”, then “rang” — the order of events is clear ✓
