Capital letters and full stops show where a sentence starts and ends. Names of people, places, days, months and festivals always start with a capital letter — and so does the word I.

Writing tip

Start big, stop with a dot — “a sentence starts with a capital letter and a telling sentence ends with a full stop”

  1. Use a capital letter for the first word of every sentence and for the word I.
  2. Use a capital letter for names: people (Riya), places (Kochi), days (Thursday), months (June) and festivals (Onam).
  3. End a telling sentence with a full stop. Two complete ideas need two sentences: “The bell rang. The children ran out.”

Use it for: Every sentence you write — school answers, stories, letters and notices.

Worked example: Which word needs a capital letter? → kochi

  1. The sentence: We visited the old fort in kochi on Thursday.
  2. “kochi” is the name of a place (a city), so it needs a capital letter: Kochi.

Check: We, Kochi and Thursday all start with capitals now — first word, place, day ✓
