Complete sentence or fragment — English writing skills for kids
A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense. “The hungry monkey.” leaves you waiting — what did it do? That is a fragment. “The hungry monkey grabbed a banana.” is a complete sentence.
Two parts, one idea — “a sentence needs a subject (who or what) and a predicate (what happens)”
Find WHO or WHAT the words are about — the subject (The hungry monkey).
Find WHAT HAPPENS — the predicate (grabbed a banana).
Both parts, and the idea is finished? It is a complete sentence. A part missing, or words like “When the bell rang” or “Running in the park” on their own? It is a fragment.
Use it for: Every answer you write in school, and fixing half-sentences in your compositions.
Worked example: Which of these is NOT a complete sentence (a fragment)? → The hungry monkey.
The choices: “The hungry monkey.”, “The train left the station at nine.”, “The children sang a song in the hall.”, “The school bell rang loudly.”
Three of them have a subject and a predicate. “The hungry monkey.” names an animal but does not say what it did — it is a fragment.
Check: Add a predicate and it becomes a sentence: “The hungry monkey grabbed a banana.” ✓
Read every choice carefully, then tap the one that is written correctly. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
