Email etiquette — English writing skills for kids

An email reaches its reader in seconds — so it must be clear and polite. A good subject line, a proper greeting and a kind tone make the reader want to help.

Writing tip

Clear and polite — “a subject that says what it is about, “Dear …”, please, thank you”

  1. Subject line: a few words that say exactly what the email is about (Maths homework for today).
  2. Open with “Dear” + the name and a comma (Dear Ms Singh,); ask politely (Could you please …?).
  3. Do not write in CAPITAL LETTERS (it looks like shouting); close with “Thank you and regards,” and your name.

Use it for: Emails to teachers, coaches and relatives, and email writing in Class 6–8.

Worked example: Nisha is writing an email to her teacher. Which sentence is the most polite? → Could you please send me the notes?

  1. “Send me the notes now.” is an order; “SEND ME THE NOTES!!!” looks like shouting.
  2. A polite request uses “Could you please …?”: Could you please send me the notes?

Check: “please” + a question = polite ✓
