Writing tip

Address, date, Dear, body, Yours lovingly — “an informal letter to family or friends follows a fixed order”

  1. Order: your address → the date → the greeting → the body → the closing → your name.
  2. Greeting: “Dear” + the name you call the person + a comma (Dear Riya, Dear Grandma,).
  3. Closing: “Yours lovingly,” (no apostrophe in Yours, a comma after it), then your name on the next line.

Use it for: Letters to grandparents, friends and cousins, and the informal letter question in Class 4–8 exams.

Worked example: Kabir is writing a letter to his friend Arjun. Which greeting is correct? → Dear Arjun,

  1. A greeting is “Dear” + the name + a comma.
  2. Not “Dear Arjun.” (full stop), not “Dear, Arjun” (comma in the wrong place), not “Dear Sir,” (that is formal): Dear Arjun,

Check: Dear Arjun, … Yours lovingly, Kabir ✓
