📏 Roman numerals rules

  1. Add when a smaller letter comes after a bigger one: VI = 5 + 1 = 6, LX = 50 + 10 = 60.
  2. Subtract when a smaller letter comes before a bigger one: IV = 5 − 1 = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90.
  3. Only I, X and C are used to subtract — and only from the next two bigger letters (I from V and X; X from L and C).
  4. A letter can repeat up to 3 times: III = 3, XXX = 30. Write 4 as IV, not IIII.
  5. V, L and D never repeat.
  6. Build big numbers in parts: 94 = 90 + 4 = XC + IV = XCIV.
= MMXXVI
