The method

Read, picture, count — “picture the whole cut into equal parts, then count”

  1. Picture the whole and the equal parts it is cut into.
  2. Bottom number = equal parts in all; top number = parts taken.
  3. Use the lesson’s method: divide for “half of”, count jumps on a line, compare unit fractions by their bottom number.

Use it for: Revising Part 1 before a Class 3 or Class 4 fractions test.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: How many quarters make 2 wholes? → 8

  1. 4 quarters make 1 whole.
  2. For 2 wholes: 2 × 4 = 8.

Check: 8 × 1/4 = 8/4 = 2 ✓
