Ages 7–9 (Class 2–4) — halves, quarters and thirds, numerator and denominator, fractions of a shape, fractions on a number line and unit fractions.
Ages 9–11 (Class 4–6) — equivalent fractions, simplest form, comparing like and unlike fractions, and putting fractions in order.
Ages 10–12 (Class 5–7) — adding and subtracting with the same and with different denominators, mixed numbers and improper fractions.
Ages 11–14 (Class 6–8) — fraction of a number, multiplying and dividing fractions, finding the whole, and word problems with rotis, pizzas, rupees and cricket overs.
A fraction is a part of a whole. When a roti is cut into 4 equal pieces and you eat 3 of them, you have eaten 3/4 (three quarters) of it. The bottom number, the denominator, tells how many equal parts the whole is cut into; the top number, the numerator, tells how many of those parts we take. Fractions are everywhere — sharing food, money, time, measuring, cricket overs — and they come before decimals, percentages, ratio and algebra. This free course follows the order schools teach them, from Class 2 to Class 8: Part 1 (ages 7–9) meets halves, quarters, thirds, numerators, denominators and the number line; Part 2 (ages 9–11) covers equivalent fractions, simplest form, comparing and ordering; Part 3 (ages 10–12) adds and subtracts fractions and works with mixed numbers; Part 4 (ages 11–14) multiplies, divides, finds a fraction of a number and solves word problems. Every lesson explains the method in plain words, works an example, and gives unlimited practice with “Show me how”, a 20-question test, a badge and printable worksheets with answers.

A fraction is a part of a whole that has been cut into equal parts. In 3/4, the bottom number (denominator) 4 says the whole is cut into 4 equal parts, and the top number (numerator) 3 says we take 3 of them.
Most children meet halves and quarters at 6–7 years (Class 1–2), write fractions and compare them at 8–10 (Class 3–5), and add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions at 10–13 (Class 5–8). This course covers ages 7–14 in four parts, so a child can start at the right part.
Multiply (or divide) the top and the bottom by the same number: 2/3 = 4/6 = 8/12. Never add the same number to both — 2/3 and 3/4 are not equal.
Change both fractions to the same bottom number using the LCM, then add the tops: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. Simplify the answer if you can.
Keep, change, flip: keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second fraction. 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2.
