The method

Common denominator — “change every fraction to the same bottom number, then order the tops”

  1. Find the LCM of the bottom numbers.
  2. Change each fraction to that bottom number.
  3. Order the top numbers: ascending is smallest first, descending is largest first.

Use it for: Ascending and descending order questions in Class 5–7, and ranking shares or results.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: Arrange 1/2, 2/3, 5/12 in ascending order (smallest first). → 5/12, 1/2, 2/3

  1. The LCM of 2, 3 and 12 is 12: 1/2 = 6/12, 2/3 = 8/12, 5/12 = 5/12.
  2. Order the tops: 5 < 6 < 8.

Check: 5/12 < 6/12 < 8/12 ✓
