Simplest form of a fraction — Fractions for kids

A fraction is in its simplest form (lowest terms) when no number except 1 divides both the top and the bottom. 12/18 is not: both divide by 6, and 12/18 = 2/3.

The method

Divide by the HCF — “the highest common factor takes a fraction to its simplest form in one step”

  1. Find the HCF (highest common factor) of the top and the bottom.
  2. Divide the top and the bottom by the HCF.
  3. If the HCF is 1, the fraction is already in its simplest form.

Use it for: Every fraction answer in school maths — teachers expect answers in simplest form — and ratio questions later.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: Write 12/18 in its simplest form. → 2/3

  1. Find the HCF of 12 and 18: 12 = 6 × 2 and 18 = 6 × 3, so the HCF is 6.
  2. Divide the top and the bottom by 6: 12 ÷ 6 = 2, 18 ÷ 6 = 3.

Check: 2 × 6 = 12 and 3 × 6 = 18 ✓
